"ALTERNATIVE" FRONTIER COLLEGE IN ASSOCIATION
STEAM WHISTLE BREWING PRESENTS THE GILLER LIGHT
The Giller Light Committee
for Frontier College will host a major fundraising party
on November 5, 2002 the same night as the Giller Prize Dinner.
All proceeds will go toward Frontier College's Homework
The Giller Prize is the most prestigious
literary award in Canada and for the past eight years it
has been the most coveted invitation in Toronto among publishing
executives, literary media, authors and other literati.
The Giller Prize invitation is hand-delivered by a tuxedo-clad,
rose-bearing "courier." Invitees are wined and
dined at the Four Seasons Hotel shoulder to shoulder with
the five Giller-nominated authors. For everyone else in
this city who doesn't get invited, there is now an alternative:
THE GILLER LIGHT!
Steam Whistle Brewing is sponsoring
the Giller Light and the bash will be held Tuesday, November
5, from 8 PM to 1 AM in the historic Roundhouse building,
which houses the brewery and is located at the foot of the
CN Tower. Steam Whistle beer will be flowing at the party,
while BRAVO's telecast the Giller Prize live on a large
screen so that party-goers can feel like they are a part
of the real thing. There will be raffles and door prizes
throughout the evening and a chance to bet on which of the
Giller nominees will take home the $25,000 prize. After
the winner is announced, the disco ball lights up the room
and DJ Bobby Guy's mod tunes will fill the dance floor.
Jack Rabinovitch is the founder of
the Giller Prize, which is named for his late wife Doris
Giller, a book review editor for the Montreal Gazette and
the Toronto Star. Mr. Rabinovitch, who was once a labourer-teacher
for Frontier College, has offered his support to the Giller
Light Committee for Frontier College:
"Congratulations to Frontier College
- one of the pioneers of literacy, teaching new (and "old"!)
Canadians how to read and write. Frontier College highlights
the primacy of language and opens doors to new opportunities.
We wish the Giller Light fundraiser much success."
Frontier College was founded in 1899 by students
and graduates of Queen's University. Its mission was to
teach people in remote, "frontier" settlements
to read. Today Frontier College is active in all provinces
and territories and in both official languages. John O'Leary,
president of Frontier College is very excited about the
"The Giller Light event is helping Frontier
College recruit the people and raise the funds required
to support our literacy programs throughout the GTA. Come
out and be a part of it. Together we can turn T.O. into
the city that reads!"
